Arthur Penrhyn Stanley 1815 - 1881) was an English churchman, Dean of Westminster, and was Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Oxford, a post which, with the attached canonry at Christ Church, he held till 1863. He began his treatment of the subject with "the first dawn of the history of the church," the call of Abraham; and published the first two volumes of his History of the Jewish Church in 1863 and 1865, the third volume published in 1876. Recognised as an important and is noted as the first attempt by an English Scholar to produce such and extensive work on Jewish history. Full Brown calf, beautifully gilded and decorated tooled spines with serries title in red panel and volume title in green panel, blind tooled and gilt tooled decative borders to bds, blind tooled dentille decoration inside, marbed to all edges, marbled eps. Vol 1 Abraham to Samuel [7th edition] pp xxxvi 454 with 2 fold out maps (one with colour) 1 fold out plan and one plan through text; Volume 2 Samuel to the Captivity [5th edition] pp xxiv 506 with 3 fold out maps, one in full colour; Volume 3 The Captivity to the Christian Era [3rd edition] pp xxxii with 2 maps. CONDITION Bds in excellent condition except for 2 small abrasions top front of V3, copies are bright and crisp as new internally apart from light toning to end pages and small tidy ownership stamps inside. OVERWEIGHT. Near Fine.
