Mont Pelee volcano famous for its eruption in 1902 which destroyed the city of St Pierre which was the largest on the island of Martinique. It was dubbed the worst volcanic disaster of the 20th century. The eruption killed about 30,000 people with only two survivors. This is a detailed eye witness discription of a pyroclatic eruption with half tone photo and illus plates. CONDITION Brown cloth with bright Gilt encised titles and decorative illus to front (a little shelf wear and small stain top front o/w nice and clean) bright gilt top edge, frontis illus with tissue guard, pp viii 257 with 11 plates internally. Bright and crisp copy has toning to pages opposing plates due to differing paper types (as standard for this era). A very nice copy. Very Good/N/A.
