Description: Wellington, New Zealand, Government Printer. 1963, First Edition. Hard Cover with dust jacket, 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. In 1834 Markham spent eight and a half months in New Zealand, first in the Hokianga district and later in the Bay of Islands. He described his experiences with unusual candour relates stories of James Busby, F E Maning and others, early Maori interaction and customs spelt phonetically. The account has been extensively checked for accuracy and clarification by E H McCormick with an introductory essay and extensive reference section, there are many illus by Markham. This is the first in a series of Turnbull Library Mongraphs and the first publication of his manuscript. CONDITION Green bds, 113 pages with 6 colour illus plates of Markhams water colours, a half tone frontis portrait and location a map, 28 b/w illus through text of scenes, people, plants, constructions and anything else he saw. Unworn copy is bright and crisp internally with name to front paste down and toning to pages near end. DJ has light shelf wear and toning. #New Zealand History#. Very Good/Good.
