The book tells of the controversies over city development like QEII Park, the Town Hall, airport extensions, the new public library, and the hosting of the 10th Commonwealth games. A keen supporter of the arts, Sir Hamish was a driving force in the building of Christchurch Town Hall. The Sir James Hay Theatre there is named after his father, who was also a city councilor.
